“Thank you for being kind.”
“Thank you for being kind.” Those few words, written on a patient survey under ‘additional comments,’ took us by surprise.
Our first thought was that it was so sad that someone was worried about that. Yet, all too often, people go to an agency seeking help and are treated like a number not a person. Bullying is also at an all-time high. So many people don’t hesitate to call other people stupid because their beliefs are different from theirs. I don’t know about you, but I have found that Facebook, Twitter, and other social media have gone from being a place where I enjoyed seeing photos and updates from family and friends, to being a place where I often feel attacked. More and more often I see friends who post “I need to take a break from Facebook for a while.” I totally get that.
Our second thought on our patient’s comment is that we are glad she felt good about her time with us. Because that’s our goal. We know that when women come to see us they are often feeling stressed and alone. Their pregnancy may be a secret only they are carrying. Or it could be that they’ve told people who are now harassing them about what their decision should be.
